For 44 years, Sonia Manzano inspired, educated, and delighted children and families as "Maria" on Sesame Street. Throughout her career, she has continued to contribute to enriching diversity on television, on the stage, and in education. A first generation American of Latin descent, Manzano’s tale is one of perseverance and courage as she overcame countless obstacles to become one of the most influential Latinas in television.

Manzano was raised in the South Bronx, where her involvement in the arts was inspired by teachers who encouraged her to audition for the High School of Performing Arts. She was accepted there and began her career as an actress. A scholarship took her to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and in her junior year she went to New York to star in the original production of the off-Broadway show Godspell. Within a year, Manzano joined the production of Sesame Street, where she eventually began writing scripts for the series.

Manzano didn’t have a lot of resources as a child growing up in the South Bronx. Immensely talented, Sonia never gave up, and within a year of graduating college, Manzano found herself on Sesame Street. An equally impressive and captivating stage actress, she has appeared in several critically acclaimed theater performances, including "The Vagina Monologues,” “The Exonerated,” and “Love, Loss, and What I Wore.

An award-winning television writer and children’s book author, Manzano is a master storyteller.  Continuing to inspire children off screen, Manzano’s children’s book, No Dogs Allowed, was selected by the General Mills initiative "Spoonfuls of Stories" to become a children’s musical to encourage childhood literacy. Her first young adult novel, The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano, examines the Latino community during the Civil Rights Era through the eyes of a young girl coming of age in the midst of social upheaval in 1969 Spanish Harlem.

Manzano's latest books are her memoir, Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx (Scholastic, 2015), and a Christmas picture book, Miracle on 133rd Street (Simon and Schuster, 2015).  Kirkus Reviews says, “Manzano lovingly details life-changing moments” with a “stark and heartbreaking contrast to her Sesame Street character.”

Manzano inspires audiences with her passion, strength and insight into success. Whether speaking out for literacy, diversity, or addressing the issues children face in our media-saturated life, she is a familiar, engaging voice that brings new light to her roles and to our lives.

Our Mission

With a passion for those we serve, Clifford Beers has a respected century-plus tradition of bringing leading-edge mental health solutions to children and families.

Today Clifford Beers continues to lead the field as it develops and implements community based systems of care.  Clifford Beers takes a wide-angle view of the child and family.  It is this view that sets us apart.

Our work is grounded in the known linkage among chronic medical conditions, mental health issues and social determinants of health.  Recent evidence shows that any care approach that does not take into account this dynamic can significantly inhibit the efficacy of any single treatment plan -- negatively impacting overall health and wellness.

At Clifford Beers, we always look at the whole family's physical, mental and environmental stressors to better coordinate unified programs of care where medical, mental health and social work providers join forces to help families move forward.

. . . is to provide integrated services addressing mental, physical, and social determinants in order to improve health, resiliency, and quality of life of children, families, and communities.

Why Choose the

Builders of Hope Breakfast

CB_HeartArt_Small.png
Children, Families, Communities - Moving Forward

Associate your business with the Builders of Hope Breakfast – an event that has been convening members of the community for 16 years. Together we are creating a network of like-minded individuals who champion community-based systems of care that take a “whole-istic” view of the child and family.

This year, expanded sponsorship opportunities are available! In July 2018, Clifford Beers acquired the Child Guidance Center of Mid-Fairfield (Norwalk) in order to reach more families in need of high-quality, affordable, behavioral health services.

To deepen the work between the agencies, on the eve of the Builders of Hope Breakfast there will be a Meet and Greet/ Book Signing with Sonia at Stepping Stones Children’s Museum (Norwalk, just off I-95 exit 15). Want to expand your advertising reach? Consider associating your name with both events.

Why Choose To Be a Builder of Hope?

  • You will join a group of 3,800 key community leaders who have come together since the breakfast began.

  • Past notable speakers have included Joe Pantoliano (award-winning actor and mental health care advocate) and Ron Suskind (Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist & author of Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism)

  • Sponsorship opportunities include online presence, event day signage and other printed materials, email promotions, tickets to the breakfast, and much more.

  • Impact 300+ guests in attendance as well as thousands of individuals exposed to the event’s marketing.

As a sponsor, you will be counted among community leaders such as Southern Connecticut State University, Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, Yale-New Haven Hospital, and many more who are helping children, families and communities move forward.

Take a look at the exciting packages on the Sponsorship Opportunities sheet to find one that fits your budget and marketing goals. We are happy to work with you to create a package that is tailored to your specific needs. Note: early support offers the greatest exposure!

Corporate sponsorship is invaluable. It will allow 100 percent of event proceeds to benefit Clifford Beers school-based programs and trauma training in schools throughout Connecticut. Thank you for your consideration! We look forward to partnering with you for our 16th Annual Builders of Hope Breakfast!
