Author, Recovering Addict & Subject of the movie Beautiful Boy

NIC SHEFF

"Life-Changing Speaker", Author, Recovering Addict and Subject of the Major Motion Picture Beautiful Boy

Nic Sheff’s heartbreaking and inspiring struggle with substance

abuse disorder is the story of Beautiful Boy, a major motion picture starring Timothée Chalamet as Nic and Steve Carell as his father, David.  Sharing an unglamorized, authentic and

heart-touching story of substance abuse and recovery that is deeply rooted in mental illness, Nic has been
recognized as “a life-changing speaker.” His deeply engaging talks put a compelling human face on our nation’s substance abuse epidemic, encouraging those who struggle to embrace help and bringing hope to all who are touched by it.

Sober since 2011, Nic continues to write and travel the country speaking about substance abuse, mental health, bipolar disorder and recovery. His talks cover areas ranging from prevention and talking effectively to teens to using prayer and meditation to quiet the unquiet mind. Nic is also the author of four books on these subjects: High: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Alcohol, and Addiction, Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, We All Fall Down: Living with Addiction, and Schizo, his critically acclaimed novel about a teen’s downward spiral into mental illness. Nic drew upon his own history of self-harm and attempted suicide as a writer for Netflix’s controversial series, 13 Reasons Why and upon his experiences in rehab as a writer for ABC Family/Freeform’s series Recovery Road. Nic was also a writer on AMC's crime drama The Killing and has written several features and developed TV series with Warner Brothers, USA, Amazon, and Paramount Television. He has also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and on CNN with Sanjay Gupta and ABC with Diane Sawyer.

A passionate voice and inspiring speaker, Nic hopes that the intense notoriety and media attention being paid to the film version of Beautiful Boy will elevate awareness, create more empathy for those who struggle with substance abuse disorder, and inspire more to recognize danger signs and get help. A self-identified “bipolar addict”, he also seeks to raise awareness of dual diagnosis and the frequent interconnection between substance abuse and types of frequently untreated mental illness.

Our Mission

. . . is to provide integrated services addressing mental, physical,
and social determinants in order to improve health, resiliency, and quality of life of children, families, and communities.

With a passion for those we serve, Clifford Beers has a respected century-plus tradition of bringing leading-edge mental health solutions to children and families.

Today Clifford Beers continues to lead the field as it develops and implements community based systems of care.  Clifford Beers takes a wide-angle view of the child and family.  It is this view that sets us apart.

Our work is grounded in the known linkage among chronic medical conditions, mental health issues and social determinants of health.  Recent evidence shows that any care approach that does not take into account this dynamic can significantly inhibit the efficacy of any single treatment plan -- negatively impacting overall health and wellness.

At Clifford Beers, we always look at the whole family's physical, mental and environmental stressors to better coordinate unified programs of care where medical, mental health and social work providers join forces to help families move forward.

Why Choose the

Builders of Hope Breakfast

CB_HeartArt_Small.png
Children, Families, Communities - Moving Forward

Associate your business with the 17th Annual Builders of Hope event, which has been convening members of the community for 17 years. Through this event we create a network of champions of like-minded individuals who want to bring attention to community based systems of care that take a “whole-istic” view of the child and family.

This year’s event will focus on the growing epidemic of substance abuse and the overwhelming need for services within the state and around the country. Clifford Beers’ mission is to improve the health of children, adults and families by providing trauma-informed, integrated mental and physical health care and services that address the social determinants of health in multiple settings.

Approximately 14% of teenagers 12-18 screened at CB this past year endorsed some type of issue with substance use in the past year. That equates to 1 and 7 teens that we screen.

Why Choose the Builders of Hope Breakfast?

  • More than 4,000 key community leaders have come together since this event began.

  • Impact 300+ guests in attendance as well as thousands of individuals exposed to the event’s marketing.

  • Sponsorship opportunities include online presence, event day signage and other printed materials, email promotions, tickets to the breakfast, and much more.

  • Past notable speakers have included: Sonia Manzano, “Maria” on Sesame Street, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris (Founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness, received 21st Heinz Award), and Joe Pantoliano (award-winning actor and mental health care advocate), and Ron Suskind (Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist & Author of Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism)

Join with other community leaders such as Southern Connecticut State University, Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, Yale-New Haven Hospital, and many more, who are all helping to strengthen families and build healthy communities.

Take a look at the exciting packages on the Sponsorship Opportunities sheet to find one that fits your budget and marketing goals. We are happy to work with you to create a package that is tailored to your specific needs. Early support offers the greatest exposure!

The corporate sponsors provide valuable support and allow 100 percent of the proceeds to benefit Clifford Beers’ substance abuse services in clinic and in the community.

Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to collaborating with you for our 17th Annual Builders of Hope Breakfast!
